It is supremely important for your flooring to harmonize with your interior decoration. And in this living room, the carpet not only compliments the design but also adds character and value to the room.
Carpet these days is not as common for flooring in living rooms as you might think. We crunched some numbers and based on hundreds of thousands of living rooms, found that only 13.6% of living rooms have carpet.
With the growing popularity of hardwood, laminate and the many new types of flooring hitting the market such as many types of stone flooring, carpeting is simply not all that popular.
Moreover, area rugs in living rooms provide the benefits of carpet yet give you options and let you have the coveted hardwood or laminate.
Nevertheless, 13.6% of living rooms is still a big number and so we figured many people do want carpet in their living rooms. Accordingly, we put together this gallery so that you can get ideas for own home.

Should you get carpet for your living room?
If it's your thing, sure. It's not a problem; in fact there are some big benefits such as:
- Soft: Other floors are hard, which isn't so nice, especially if you like sitting on the floor.
- Warmer: If you like being barefoot in your home, carpet is much nicer on bare feet.
- Noise canceling: This is a big benefit, especially if you watch television or listen to music or have noisy kids.
- Great for kids/Bad for kids (see below): I have young kids… read my comments about kids and carpeting below.
But like most things for the home, there are some disadvantages such as:
- Gets dirty and is hard to clean: You need to spend a lot time cleaning it and at various intervals you need to steam clean it.
- Can get stained: This is a big problem, although there are stain-resistant options. Nevertheless eventually dirt won't come out.
- Gets dated: Think 1970's. That crazy shag carpet was great then, it's terrible now.
- Must be replaced eventually: Carpeting doesn't last nearly as long as a quality hardwood or tile and so you must pay for replacement every several years.
Kids and carpeting in the living room
If you have young kids like we do, carpeted rooms are great because it's soft and warm for them to play on. This is especially good when they're learning to walk. I also much prefer sitting on carpet than wood when playing with them.
However, kids spill a lot and so you can expect to get some pretty horrendous stains on your carpet if you let them eat or drink in the living room. Sure, you can try to stop them from eating and drinking in the living room, but at some point they're going to make their way in there with that ketchup filled hotdog or cup of grape juice.
One final reason it's not so great for kids is when they get a bit older, such as 4 or 5 and they start playing with trains or Lego. The uneven surface is difficult for them to set up their scenes, cities, etc.
But isn't the living room for adults?
The old school home had a formal living room and a separate family room. The family room is presumably where kids would play and the living room was "out-of-bounds". Our home has this layout.
However, many homes today don't have a separate family room and so the living room is the main sitting/entertainment room of the home. In this case, kids will be in there a lot.
That said, we have a separate family room for the kids, but they spend much time in the living room too. FYI, both our living room and family room has hardwood floor. We bought some kids' mats to play on for the family room.
Which type of carpet should you get?
This is a mega topic on its own. Check out our massive carpet buying guide here. With respect to carpet color, beige is by far the most popular, followed by gray. We have a data-based carpet color chart here.
That said, if you have kids or plan on using your living room quite a bit, you definitely want a stain-resistant carpet. On the flip side, because it's your living room, you want it to be nice. Wool is the very best fiber, but it's not stain resistant. If nice carpet is your focus, wool is your best option and since a living room can be a showpiece of a room, wool should be considered. Oh yeah, wool is also the most expensive which may force your hand to get synthetic.
